Brindisi Airport (Aeroporto di Brindisi in Italian) is a one terminal airport located on the ”heel of the boot” in southern Italy. It is located 6 km/3.7 mi from Brindisi city center. The airport is also known as Salento Airport, Casale, and Brindisi Papola Casale Airport (the latter is the official name).

Antonio Papola was an Italian aviator with a special bond to the city. Papola died in an air accident in 1948. Casale is a reference to the contiguous neighborhood in Brindisi, and Salento is a reference to the geographic region of the airport’s location.

The airport’s IATA code is BDS and the ICAO code is LIBR.

Brindisi Airport was originally established in the 1920s as a military airbase. It began serving commercial flights to Rome in the 1930s. The airport’s status was officially changed from military to civilian in 2008, although it is still maintaining the operational military facilities attached to it.

The airport has one single terminal divided into two levels and an arrivals area and a departures area. It serves both national and international routes. Some routes are all year round while others are seasonal.

There are a total of 13 boarding gates at the airport.

Salento Airport saw just over 1,000,000 passengers come through it during 2020, which was a decrease from 2019’s 2,697,749 passengers. The decrease was due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The airport has two asphalt runways of 5,892 ft/1,796 m and 10,000 ft/3,048 m long respectively.

Transfers at Brindisi Papola Casale Airport

Rental Cars – There are a variety of car rental companies at Brindisi Airport and their desks can be found in the arrivals area. It is recommended to arrange for the rented vehicle before the arrival at the airport to make sure a vehicle is available. Walk-ups will be serviced if there is availability.

Buses – An Airport shuttle bus service is provided for transfer between Brindisi and the airport. The shuttles depart approximately every 30-45 minutes and it connects BDS with Brindisi Railway Station and Costa Morena Harbor where tourist ferries and boats are located. The latter location is not served during the early morning hours and the late evening hours, during which time the route ends and starts at the Railway Station. Taxis – The taxi rank is located outside the arrivals hall of the airport. Official taxi cabs have a taxi sign on the roof and are white or yellow and drivers will not approach travelers. Drivers who approach travelers are unlicensed and should be ignored or kindly declined as they often scam travelers through overcharging for the ride. A taxi transfer from the airport to central Brindisi will cost approximately 20€ and take around 15 minutes depending on the exact destination.

P1 is located right in front of the terminal building and it has 599 parking spaces while P9 is located a short walk from the terminal and has 137 parking spaces. Both are outdoors and open air parking lots and there are disabled parking spaces available in both lots for free, provided that requirements are met.
